Close Calls For Two Storms
Two storms are to track perilously close to the Maine coast. The first arrives in the wee hours of Friday, the second Saturday night into Sunday. While accumulations appear light for Friday, Coastal Hancock and Washington counties may require the plow crews to treat the roads early Sunday morning.
Friday starts off with morning snow showers for the coast. I can’t rule out the chance for a sand/salt run for the plow trucks for York County on up through Eastport, but overall this appears to be a very light event. York County may pick up an inch or two from Sanford to Biddeford south. Elsewhere it appears to be an inch or less inside I-95, I-295, and generally south and east of Route 1.
High temperatures appear to be in the teens and 20s for most of the region, with immediate shoreline areas may reach the low 30s. The breeze appears to pick up a bit in the afternoon out of the west / northwest at 5-15 mph, which will bring more cold air in for Saturday.
Saturday Through Monday
Not much has changed from my previous post as far as how the weekend will play out. After a bitter cold start to Saturday with wind chill values and temperatures below zero for the mountains and north, the day starts off mostly clear statewide, but clouds appear on the increase Saturday afternoon as warm air aloft from the system over the southeast moves towards the region. Highs for the day range in the single digits for the north and mountains, teens for the interior, and low to mid-20s for the shorelines.
Snow showers break Saturday night as the storm moves up the eastern seaboard. The southwest coast may see snow showers break out early evening, Penobscot Bay eastward by late evening. Any snow showers over the southwest coast wrap up by midnight, and by 4 AM over DownEast coastal areas. The area that I am concerned with for accumulations is from Penobscot Bay to Vanceboro, south and east. At this point it appears to be anywhere from a dusting to two inches. I will update on this in my next post.
Sunday appears to bring a mix of sun and clouds and bitter cold. Highs for the day range in to around 0° north and mountains, teens for the interior to right around 20° at the shores. A northwest breeze picks up in the afternoon which will put wind chill values below zero over much of the state.
The work week starts off mostly sunny but frigid. Clouds increase in the afternoon. Highs around 0° for the north and mountains, and teens elsewhere.
